John Skoglund

Port Lyautey, Morocco and USS Maury, AGS16

The following photographs were taken by John Skoglund during his tour of duty at NAS Port Lyautey. For those who served with him at the Port or aboard the USS Maury, he can be reached at john.skoglund@verizon.net.

John's Navy tour began with Boot Camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center followed by Surveyor School, USNCBC Port Hueneme, CA from August 1957 - November 1957. He was assigned to Amphibious Construction Battalion 2 at Little Creek, VA (FFA) between November 1957 - January 1958 and then to NAS Port Lyautey - January 1958 - June 1959. That is where John and "yours truly" met when we both served with the Seabee detachment assigned to the base Public Works. After Port Lyautey, John was assigned to the USS Maury, AGS16, between September 1959 - July 1960 with cruises to the Black Sea beginning in October 1959 and ports of call at Trabzon, Turkey for 2 days and Odessa, Ukraine, USSR for 4 days. Subsequentl to the Med cruise, the Maury's home port was changed from the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Pearl Harbor.

The Maury transited the Panama Canal to San Diego and then on to Pearl Harbor for WestPac cruises to Guam, Philippines, Gulf of Siam survey area, Bangkok twice, Taipei, Hong Kong, Guam and then back to Pearl Harbor for his discharge. He worked at General Dynamics Astronautics, Atlas missile base, Mead, NE from July 1960 - August 1962. Moving to California in August 1962. He attended and graduated from San Diego State in 1970 with a BS in Accounting. He was a CPA with the Public accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand between 1970 - 1980, Private industry 1980 - present time in Mortgage banking, Savings & Loan and Commercial banking. He is currently a Corporate Controller - Aviation subsidiary of Toyota, USA (AirFlite, Inc. at KLGB)

John and his bride Alice have been married for 52+ years and have 3 daughters, 1 son, 3 grandsons & 1 granddaughter - their pride & joy. He has lived in Southern California since 1962
with his family and 1 dog, 3 cats & his horse who is now 26 years old & retired. John is a rabid Nebraska Huskers fan and loves to travel, watch sports, play golf & spend time with family.
