The following photographs and comments were submitted by Dick Allen who arrived in Morocco in 1961. The photographs are of friends and scenes of Des Oudaias.

Just off the Rue des Consuls, Rabat, the Oudaia was built by Moulay Ismail in the 17th century as his residence in Morocco. Surrounded by a huge wall, there is a beautiful garden with orange trees, roses and flowers hanging down from the walls.

Strolling inside

Walking within the gardens with one of M. Annoni's sons. They called Dick, Ton-Ton Dick, which is French baby talk for "uncle" and "Dik is slang for a mutt. They thought this was quite humerous.

Irrigation in the gardens is accomplished via a well lifted by a Naria, a vertical wheel with a chain of buckets, turned by a donkey. Al Kunkel in the photo.
